Can Prescription Medications Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

Updated: Mar 20

Have you ever been prescribed a medication for a health condition or for pain that had weird side effects like temporary ED or low libido? Chances are if it did, then your doctor definitely didn’t go over these side effects with you.

Now don’t get me wrong, a doctor's job is to look out for your overall health and well-being. For instance, if you get into a car accident, get injured, and need muscle relaxers, then it’s safe to say that your doctor had a GOOD reason to prescribe you this, especially if the injury is only temporary.

However, if you’re finding it hard to stay active in the bed or to keep an erection after long-term or even short-term use of prescription drugs, then there is a problem.

Erectile dysfunction is not only a common problem for men of age, but it can be a complex one too. There are several reasons that can contribute to erectile dysfunction, but when you rule out blood flow and other health issues, then chances are it may be your medicine cabinet.

BDE Style is here to help you keep an eye out for prescription medications that may cause erectile dysfunction.

Why Do Certain Medications Cause Ed?

To achieve and maintain erections, it is important to have proper blood flow to the penis. Additionally, you need functioning nerves, a stimulus and to be in the right mood in order for your erection to even happen in the first place. While treating a medical condition, prescription drugs may affect a man’s hormones, nerves, and blood circulation throughout the body.

As we all know the importance of blood flow and the nervous system for an erection to be achieved, these medications can really screw things up if you’re not aware of it. Our erections are extremely fragile and it can be very complicated to figure out the root cause of ED if you have too many factors to consider. But, when it comes to prescription medication, this “medically induced ED” is more common than you think.

Did you know that 1 out of 4 cases of ED is usually linked to medications with side effects of ED?

According to the Harvard Medical School, one of the reasons older men experience ED is because they are on some kind of medication that hinders their erections. The most common drugs that are linked with ED are anti-ulcer, antidepressants, diuretics, blood pressure medicines, and tranquilizers.

A List of Prescription Drugs That May Cause Ed

What causes ED in one man, may not be the cause of ED in another. But, it is super important to be on the lookout for these prescription drugs if your arousal and sexual performance is affected.

Here is a list of drugs that may cause a negative effect on your sexual performance.

  • High blood pressure drugs (THE MOST COMMON) and Diuretics: Atenolol, propranolol, labetalol, bumetanide, clonidine, captopril, benazepril, triamterene, methyldopa, enalapril, hydralazine, nifedipine, metoprolol, etc.

  • Antihistamines: Meclizine, hydroxyzine, dimenhydrinate, promethazine, diphenhydramine, etc.

  • Antiarrhythmics: Disopyramide.

  • Muscle Relaxants: Orphenadrine, and Cyclobenzaprine.

Depending on your health condition and hormone levels, these drugs may or may not affect you. A professional healthcare provider is the only person that can guide you on whether these medicines will affect your sexual health or not.

Should I Stop Taking My Medication if It Causes Ed?

Most guys do one of two things; stop taking their medication or live with the side effect of erectile dysfunction. This is not a decision you should be making on your own.

It is not ideal to just stop taking your medication, especially if it’s supposed to help a certain health condition like heart disease or high blood pressure. And, it is also not ideal to just stay quiet and let ED just happen.

So what do you do? You go back to your doctor and explain what’s going on. You can simply ask:

Is this drug really necessary for my health?

Is there an alternative drug that doesn’t have a side effect of erectile dysfunction?

There are a lot of alternative medications on the market. It’s all about communicating with your doctor about the side effects and the desired outcomes.

And, if your doctor doesn’t look out for these side effects (your overall well-being), then you should switch doctors or demand that you have your medication switched to one that doesn’t affect your penile health. It’s that simple. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You should always look up and question what you are putting in your body that is prescribed or recreational, especially if your erections may potentially take a hit.

But, What if I Do Have Ed and It’s Not Medically Related to Prescription Drugs

If it’s not the prescription medications, then your ED might be caused by other underlying health issues. Heart disease is one of them and having high cholesterol and other vascular issues can hinder blood flow to the penis. If this is for your ED, then there are plenty of ways to increase blood flow to the penis.

For example, acoustic wave therapy is one of the most effective and safest methods to improve your erections. Unlike ED pills, wave therapy actually helps treat the penis by breaking down micro-plaque in the veins and arteries while repairing them. The acoustic waves induce neovascularization, which also creates new veins and blood vessels. Acoustic wave therapy has been around for a few decades ever since urologists used it to treat kidney stones and found that it can be effective on the penis at a low-intensity.

Treatments are usually 15-20 minutes long and most guys see an impressive improvement after 6-12 treatments. But, this all depends on the severity of a man’s ED. If that’s the case then some guys may need a couple more treatments.

Most guys also notice the effects last up to 2 years versus pills like Viagra that only last 4 hours.

Where Can I Find a Place That Does Acoustic Wave Therapy?

For a while, acoustic wave therapy has been offered at clinics across the world. But, at a high price point, only a handful of guys get to reap the benefits of it. As of recent, the first home-use acoustic wave therapy device called The Phoenix hit the market and has been used by a lot of men around the world at the fraction of the cost.

Most clinics charge $500 a session, but with The Phoenix, you can clock in as many sessions as you want for $879. The creators of The Phoenix built these portable acoustic wave therapy devices to last up to 66 treatments. As most guys need a good 6-12, you’ll still be able to use the device in the future to reap the benefits again.

Are You Ready to RISE to the Occasion?

The best part about using The Phoenix is that it takes a caveman to use the device. You don’t need a medical background and you don’t have to visit a doctor for it. It’s simple and easy to use at home and there are plenty of videos on how to use the device.

The medical professionals that invented this device created it to effectively treat ED, Peyronie’s disease, and to optimize performance. And for some, as a preventative care device as ED can be an age thing for some guys.

If you’re ready to rise to the occasion at the discreet comfort of your own home, check out The Phoenix here! We promise you won’t regret it.
